A healthy community could be described as one that contains those elements that enable people to maintain a high quality of life and productivity.  Local governments, private developers, and community groups can all work to create patterns of development that improve community health – by ensuring that farmers' markets and neighborhood grocery stores are supported, for instance, or by promoting sidewalks, parks and other environmental components that encourage physical activity.

This training will give participants ideas for how to plan for all age groups and create healthy, attractive and safe communities. Participants will leave with and understanding of principles, practices and tools that can help their communities create a shared vision for a healthy future.

Workshop topics include:

·         Linking the physical environment to human health;

·         Planning communities for all ages;

·         Incorporating community supported agriculture;

·         Altering plans to create a more pedestrian and bike friendly environment;

·         Touring downtown Decatur to see firsthand examples of healthy community components.
